What are boosters?

Signal boosters are devices that can help cell phone users improve their coverage in areas where they do not get a good signal. For example, signal boosters can be placed in homes or cars to provide increased signal strength for cell phones, which may let the user complete a call in areas where they previously couldn’t. When these devices are properly installed, they can help consumers, wireless service providers, and public safety-first responders by extending cell phone coverage to areas that would otherwise have weak signals such as tunnels, subways, inside buildings, and in rural areas.

How do boosters work?

Boosters increase the strength of a signal. It assists in transmitting signals from your devices back to the cell tower and vice versa. Internally, the booster is composed of parts that are similar to a FM radio. The signals that come into the booster are collected by the antenna, then amplified and retransmitted. Cell phones use different frequencies than FM, but both are carried by radio frequency (RF) waves.

Do they work?

The short answer is, yes. However, too many boosters in one area will have the opposite affect and cause poor connectivity. Malfunctioning, poorly designed, or improperly installed signal boosters can interfere with wireless networks and cause interference to a range of calls, including emergency and 911 calls.

Are boosters legal?

Yes! They are certainly legal, but there are guidelines for owning a booster device.  If a wireless provider or the FCC asks you to turn off your signal booster because it is causing interference to a wireless network, you must turn off your booster and leave it off until the interference problem can be resolved.
