3.14: National Pi Day

THE FACTS

National Pi Day is observed annually on March 14th. Pi Day is the official day to celebrate the mathematical concept of π (Pi). The first three digits of pi are 3.14. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day.

HISTORY

The earliest known official, or large-scale celebration of Pi Day, was organized by Larry Shaw in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium. The Exploratorium continues to hold Pi Day celebrations.

HOW TO OBSERVE

There are various ways to celebrate National Pi Day.  Here are some suggestions: 

  • Eating a slice of pie
  • Pie eating contests
  • Discussing the significance of the number π
  • More recently watching Life of Pi
